Washington D.C. is the top destination for policy, government, law, and nonprofit internships. Georgetown, GWU, and American University students frequently sublet their apartments during summer and semester programs, and the capital attracts interns from universities across the country who need furnished short-term housing. Georgetown, Foggy Bottom, and Dupont Circle are the most active student sublet corridors.
SublettingU lists verified student sublets near Georgetown in the Georgetown and Foggy Bottom neighborhoods, near GWU in Foggy Bottom and Dupont Circle, and near American University in Tenleytown and Cleveland Park. DC summer demand peaks in late April — use saved search alerts and act quickly on new listings in your target area.
Student sublets in DC range from $1,200 to $2,500 per month for a room in a shared apartment. Georgetown and Foggy Bottom command the highest prices due to prime location. Tenleytown and Friendship Heights (near American University) and the Dupont Circle area offer more variety. Many DC sublets include utilities, especially furnished ones aimed at summer interns.
Foggy Bottom serves both GWU and Georgetown students — it's central, walkable, and well-served by the Metro (Blue, Orange, Silver lines). Georgetown proper is desirable but pricier. Dupont Circle is popular with GWU and AU students for its walkability and transit access. Tenleytown (AU campus) and Cleveland Park are quieter residential neighborhoods on the Red Line with good access to downtown DC internship sites.
March is the critical window. DC intern season is one of the most compressed in the country — tens of thousands of students from universities nationwide compete for summer housing starting in April. Georgetown, GWU, and AU students confirm summer plans (fellowships, Hill internships, think tank positions) early and post apartments quickly. Demand from non-DC school students for furnished summer sublets near the Capitol is intense.
DC's Metro is excellent and covers all three university areas. The Blue/Orange/Silver lines connect Foggy Bottom (GWU, Georgetown shuttle) directly to Capitol Hill, downtown, and Reagan National Airport. The Red Line serves Tenleytown (American University) and Cleveland Park. Most DC intern sites near K Street, Capitol Hill, and the Mall are Metro-accessible. A car is genuinely optional in DC — most students do without one.
