The Research Triangle — home to Duke in Durham, UNC in Chapel Hill, and NC State in Raleigh — is one of the most dynamic university markets in the Southeast. Proximity to major biotech, pharma, and tech companies in Research Triangle Park drives strong summer subletting activity across all three campuses. Durham's Ninth Street, Chapel Hill's Franklin Street, and Raleigh's Cameron Village are the student housing hubs.
SublettingU lists verified student sublets near Duke in Durham, near UNC in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, and near NC State in Raleigh. The Triangle is spread across three distinct cities — specify your target university or neighborhood when searching. Many biotech and pharma interns at Research Triangle Park look for housing in Durham or Chapel Hill, both of which are well-positioned.
Student sublets in the Triangle range from $800 to $1,700 per month for a room in a shared apartment — more affordable than most major coastal university cities. Duke's Trinity Park and Ninth Street neighborhoods run $900–$1,700. UNC's Carrboro and Chapel Hill corridors run $800–$1,500. NC State's Hillsborough Street and Wolf Village areas run $800–$1,400. Most furnished sublets include utilities.
Near Duke: Ninth Street, Trinity Park, and Brightleaf Square are closest to campus and most in demand. Near UNC: Carrboro (immediately west of campus) and the Franklin Street corridor in Chapel Hill. Near NC State: Hillsborough Street and the Wolfline bus corridor, Cameron Village, and Five Points neighborhood in Raleigh.
February through April. Research Triangle Park internship season runs June through August, driving significant demand from biotech and pharma students. Duke, UNC, and NC State students with summer programs or internships outside the area post apartments early. The market is competitive but less frenzied than Boston or NYC — quality furnished listings near campus are available into May if you're flexible.
A car is strongly recommended for the Triangle. The three cities are 20–30 minutes apart by car, and transit between them is limited. Within each campus area, the situation varies: Duke's campus is walkable; Chapel Hill's Wolfline and Triangle Transit buses cover UNC and Carrboro; NC State has a free Wolfline bus system within Raleigh. But for getting around the broader Triangle — especially to Research Triangle Park internship sites — a car is essentially required.
