The San Francisco Bay Area is the world's largest tech internship hub. UC Berkeley and Stanford students are constantly subletting during semester breaks and co-op terms, creating a tight but active market for short-term housing in Berkeley, Palo Alto, and surrounding areas. Silicon Valley internship demand also brings students from universities across the country looking for furnished housing for 10–16 week terms.
SublettingU lists verified student sublets near UC Berkeley in Southside, Northside, and North Oakland, and near Stanford in Palo Alto and Menlo Park. The Bay Area market moves extremely fast in summer — set up a saved search alert immediately and respond to new listings within hours. Tech intern demand is intense from May through August.
Berkeley student sublets range from $1,400 to $2,600 per month for a room in a shared apartment. Stanford-adjacent housing in Palo Alto and Menlo Park ranges from $1,600 to $3,000 — some of the highest student sublet prices in the country. East Palo Alto and Mountain View offer more affordable options within commuting distance of Stanford. Berkeley's Telegraph Ave and Southside areas offer the widest supply near campus.
Berkeley's Southside (immediately south of campus) and the Telegraph Avenue corridor have the densest concentration of student apartments. Northside (near the hills) is quieter and popular with graduate students. North Oakland — especially Rockridge and Temescal — has become popular for Berkeley students seeking slightly lower rents with good BART access. For Stanford, the Page Mill Road area and University Avenue in Palo Alto are the primary student corridors.
Start in February or early March at the latest. Bay Area summer sublets — particularly near Berkeley and Stanford — are the most competitive in the country due to tech intern demand from students at universities nationwide. Many sublets are arranged informally through university listservs before they're even posted publicly. Being on SublettingU's alert system from February onward gives you the best shot at desirable units.
Berkeley is exceptionally well-served by BART (Downtown Berkeley and Ashby stations) connecting directly to San Francisco and Oakland. Most neighborhoods within a mile of campus are walkable or bikeable. Stanford is harder for transit — the Marguerite shuttle serves the campus, and Caltrain stops in Palo Alto, but a car or bike is needed for most off-campus errands. Many Stanford intern housing listings include bike storage.
